M57 RING NEBULA and IC1296

M57, oftewel de Ringnevel, is waarschijnlijk inderdaad een ringvormig uitgestoten gaslaag waar we van boven af doorheen kijken. De schijnbare diameter is 60"x80". Met een afstand van 2300 lichtjaren is de nevel daarmee circa één lichtjaar in doorsnede. De nevel is 6000 tot 8000 jaar geleden uitgestoten. De centrale ster heeft een oppervlaktetemperatuur van meer dan 100.000K (vergelijk onze zon: 6000K).
Op circa 4' ten noordwesten van M57 staat IC 1296, een balkspiraalstelsel. De afstand tot dit stelsel is 200 miljoen lichtjaren. De helderheid van IC1296 is uiteraard veel lager dan die van M57. Om IC1296 toch in één plaatje met M57 te krijgen is deze met een 12 keer hogere helderheid weergegeven.

M57, the well-known Ring Nebula, is probably a ring-shaped gaslayer which is seen from above. The apparent size is 60"x80". The nebula is approximately 2300 light-years away and thus, has a diameter of one lightyear. The central star ejected its outer layers some 6000 to 8000 years ago. It is a white dwarf with a surface temperature in excess of 100.000K.
Some 4' NW of M57 is IC 1296, a barred spiral galaxy, at 200 million light-years distance. The magnitude of IC1296 is substancially lower than that of M57. In order to make IC1296 visible it was pasted into the same image with a 12x increased intensity.
